With the advent of instant payment systems, Swift is working with 45 banks to encourage "intraday" international transactions.
The pace of business is picking up and the same goes for payments. But while some 20 countries already implement instant payments for domestic transactions, international payments are still slow (taking days) and subject to various uncertainties. They are also expensive due to the number of intermediaries involved in such transactions. Most importantly, they lack transparency and predictability, both for turnaround time and for costs.
The Swift interbank messaging service has consequently launched its Global Payment Innovation Initiative (GPII) and is working with 45 institutions that aim to set a new standard for international payments over the longer term.
Twenty-one banks, including BNP Paribas, have volunteered to test new processes starting this summer. Damien Godderis, head of international payment services at BNP Paribas Cash Management, singled out three of the factors making this acceleration possible:
"Every transaction under the GPII will be identified by a new unique reference used by all participating banks. Every bank receiving the transaction will send confirmation of its successful execution to the previous bank, which will improve the traceability of transactions. In addition, all the participating banks will communicate on the costs applying to these transactions to make pricing more transparent for customers."
Further development of the computing system is needed to permit testing to begin this summer, with a presentation of the initial results at Sibos, the international event Swift will be hosting in September. And this is just the beginning: GPII also comprises a working party whose activities will include studying how to build in new technologies to help improve the service.

Excellent business drive in the quarter impacted by an unprecedented health crisis
The health crisis has had major repercussions on macroeconomic outlook and produced extreme shocks on the financial markets. After a quarter in line with the 2020 objectives of BNP Paribas, health crisis related developments had several major negative impacts on the first quarter 2020.
Commenting on these results, Chief Executive Officer Jean-Laurent Bonnafé stated:

Apple Pay: for your professional expenses too
Does your company provide its employees with debit and credit cards? If they have an Apple device, they can now activate Apple Pay, the contactless payment service, for all their professional expenses too.
This solution allows them to use these devices to pay online or in shops, via all terminals displaying the Apple Pay logo or the contactless payment icon. To do so, they just need to add their Mastercard or Visa credit card and/or BNP Paribas Fortis debit card to their Apple Wallet with SMS authentication.
